Installation: Problems encountered when installing HER

| CONFLICTING PROGRAMS AND SAFE-MODE BOOT (CD or floppy disk format)
| Some people have an installation problem due to conflicts with other programs that are running on your computer. Even if you aren't running another program on your main PC screen (desktop), the little icons at the bottom right hand corner of your screen are indications of other programs that are running in the background. Try right-clicking on these little icons and shutting their programs down, then try to install HER. If you can't shut them all down, try the following...
| Another thing to try if you cannot get the setup program to start properly, is to boot up you PC in "safe mode" then try to install the program. When your PC is in safe mode, the screen resolution may be different than your normal setting (less may fit on the screen).
| To start Windows in safe mode:
| Click Start, and then click Shut Down.
| Click Restart, click OK, and then ...
| (a) if you have Windows 98 or a new version of Windows...
| press and hold the CTRL key until the Microsoft Windows Startup menu appears (you hold the key down for a long time). For some machines, you use the F8 key instead of CTRL to bring up the Microsoft Windows Startup Menu. Now enter the number for Safe mode, and then press ENTER.
| (b) if you have Windows 95...
| press and hold the F8 key until the Microsoft Windows 95 Startup Menu appears. Enter the number for Safe mode, and then press ENTER.
| Now attempt to install HomeSchool Easy Records per instructions.
| When you are done with this, you can restart Windows in normal mode by clicking on Start, then on Shut Down. When Windows restarts, it will not be in safe mode.
| Note: on some PCs, you cannot do step (a) or (b) above until the blank screen that occurs JUST BEFORE the normal Windows 98/95 screen appears during a restart -- it can be tricky, thanks to Microsoft. :)

| COPYING CD FILES TO YOUR HARD DRIVE
| (CD format only) (see below for floppy issues)
| If method 1 doesn't work try this approach. Note: Some people get an error message like "Top Level Information" failed when attempting to install HER from the CD. If this happens, or if method 1 doesn't help please do the following...
| 1) Using Windows Explorer, create a new empty folder on your hard drive
| called "HER_Install" (without the quotes). You can create this
| folder directly under the "root" which is indicated as "C:"
| 2) Using Windows Explorer, copy each folder (Disk1, Disk2, Disk3, Disk4)
| from the CD into the HER_Install folder on your hard drive.
| ***** DO NOT COPY the separate files such as "autorun.inf" *****
| 3) Using Windows Explorer, find the file "setup.exe" in the Disk1 folder
| on your hard drive and double-click on it. This should start the
| installation and it should run properly.
| If this still doesn't work, please try the following "conflicting programs" tip.
| Tips on the above steps:
| -----------------------
| - In all file names mentioned here -- capitalization does NOT matter.
| - To start Windows Explorer, right click on Start then (left) click
| on Explore
| - To create the HER_Install folder
| - Click one time on the "(C:)" icon in the left hand window of
| Windows Explorer. This will highlight it.
| - Click on the File menu at the top of the Explorer window
| - Click on New then on Folder
| - When "New Folder" appears in the right hand window, immediate type
| "HER_Install" (no quotes) right over it (to rename the folder).
| - To copy a folder
| - Put the HER CD in it's drive door and wait 20 seconds for it to
| "spin up" to speed.
| - Find the CD in the left-hand window of Windows Explorer and click
| on it once. In the right window, the 4 folders should appear.
| - Right click on a folder (such as Disk1) one time in Windows Explorer
| then click on Copy
| - Move your cursor to the empty folder you just created and click
| once on it
| - In the right hand window, right-click once then click on Paste
| - Repeat this for all 4 folders
| - The full "path" (description) of the new folder you create will look
| like "c:\HER_Install" (always ignore the quotes)
| - After you copy the Disk1,2,3,4 folders, the paths to those will look
| like
| "c:\HER_Install\Disk1"
| "c:\HER_Install\Disk2"
| "c:\HER_Install\Disk3"
| "c:\HER_Install\Disk4"
| - and there will be many files in each of these folders
| - at this point you are ready for step (3) above.
| If you get error messages when installing the floppies, the floppies may be
| damaged or your floppy drive may be one of those "finicky" ones that has
| trouble reading floppies from other sources (but you can format and
| write/read your own floppies with no problems).
| If you need a replacement floppy, e-mail me at vdugar@earthlink.net and let
| me know the floppy number and version number of HER. I can send a
| replacement via e-mail (preferred) or by U.S. mail. Or you can attempt a scandisk repair of the floppy (see below).
| If you have access to another computer, it may be able to read the floppies. If so, you can use it can then create replacement floppies for you that may work in your "problem" PC.
| 1) Put the original floppy in the floppy drive
| 2) Open Windows Explorer
| 3) RIGHT-click on drive A (in the Folders area)
| 4) Select "Copy Disk" from the list that appears
| 5) It should say copy from "A" to "A". Now click on Start.
| - The program will first read the whole floppy then prompt you to
| insert the new floppy. It will then write to the new floppy.
| 6) Label the new floppy appropriately and use it to install HER with
| the others in the set.
| - Put the floppy disk in drive a:
| - Click on Start (bottom left of screen) then click on Run...
| - In the box that pops up type in "scandisk a:" (without the
| quotes) where
| it says Open: then click on the OK button
| - Scandisk window will start
| - Select the drive A:
| - Click "Thorough" (this takes a long time)
| - Click "Automatically fix errors"
| - Click on the Start button and let scandisk run
| - Close the scandisk window when you are done.
| - If scandisk was able to repair the floppy you may now be able to
| use it.
| 1) Add a line in your autoexec.bat file that reads
| "set temp=c:\windows\temp" (without the quotes)
| Create this directory (folder) if it doesn't already exist,
| then restart or reboot your computer and try again.
| 2) Make sure that the "CMOS settings" correctly identify your floppy drive
| as a 1.44 MB drive (this is the most typical). The CMOS settings are
| gotten to during boot-up when the screen says "press X to enter setup"
| (where X may be the F1 key, for example).
| 3) Make sure that your problem is not due to a bad installation disk by
| copying the disk to an empty directory on your hard disk. If the disk
| can be copied with no errors, then the disk is not bad. If you do
| receive an error message when you are copying the disk, obtain a
| replacement disk by contacting vdugar@earthlink.net.
| 4) Make sure that the PATH statement in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file includes the
| complete path to your Windows directory, including the drive letter. For
| example, if your Windows directory is named WINDOWS and is on drive C,
| your PATH statement must include:
| path=c:\windows; c:\dos
| IMPORTANT: If you change the PATH statement, you must restart your
| computer before the change takes effect.
| 5) In your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files, include only the devices or
| drivers necessary to run Windows and your computer. Remove any third-
